Revisited: Ryan Berkley

Posted by Alix on 30 September 2008

I featured Ryan Berkley back in January, and am happy to report that his Etsy store is still going strong, selling smashing prints of animals in clothes. I seriously could happily buy up loads of these, were it not for the fact I would then have to explain to the DWP that I had bankrupted myself as a result of buying pictures of besuited polar bears and pandas smoking pipes.

Revisited: Samantha Zaza

Posted by Alix on 20 August 2008

Samantha Zaza’s pigeons in military dress pencil drawings ‘Coup’ appeared in my occasional series ‘Birds in Clothes‘ in February this year. Unfortunately given the steep price I was unable to buy one (I’m not suggesting they are overpriced; frankly if I’d spent ages with the coloured pencils drawing pigeons I’d want a fair whack for it, but it’s beyond my capabilities. I do get a bit sad when I can’t buy the prints I like, though perhaps I need to get less bothered about this). There’s some nice stuff on her site under the ‘sketches’ heading, though sadly nothing very birdy (this is a slight problem of having a blog with such a well defined subject area – I feel almost like I have to apologise if I mention non-bird pieces, which is a bit silly, given that most people create a range of art and not just bird stuff, and my liking of something is not actually dependant on whether there is a bird featured. No, really!).

Here’s one of the Coup pigeons for old times sake:

Birds in Clothes – the return

Posted by Alix on 16 February 2008

nonbelievers, originally uploaded by rainymoments.

Not sure of the story behind this one, but here’s another bird in clothes, this time a shady looking cockerel, from Flickr.

Samantha Zaza (or, more birds in clothes)

Posted by Alix on 5 February 2008

Seems this is quite the trend! This time from Samantha Zaza, whose Coup series is a selection of colour pencil drawings of pigeons in military uniform. I’m assuming some wordplay on pigeon coup, military coup and the noise pigeons make. They’re really quite wonderful. They’re for sale on Etsy, though somewhat above my price range, as usual.

Oh My Cavalier!

Posted by Alix on 26 January 2008

Further to Design*Sponge’s, (and subsequently my) post about Ryan Berkley’s animals in clothing, they’ve followed up with a post about these delicate illustrations of dressed animals by Oh My Cavalier!

They remind me of something; I want to say Edward Gorey, but it’s not quite that. Not half as much shading for a start. Hmm – possibly Struwwelpeter?

Ryan Berkley illustration

An owl in a suit! Who could ask for more? Not me, that’s who not. Ryan Berkley‘s prints are available on Etsy (via the lovely Design*Sponge).
